Ice Skating with MRTSY

This post comes to you from MRTSY's Programming VP, Sarah K!

Fun on the Ice

Youth Groups MRTSY, RTSY, TOSTY, and SALTY get ready to get on the ice!

So, with some fun (and some falls) this month's MRTSY Ice Skating event was definitely a success! Some of us were really good at skating while some others were able to showcase their ... falling skills.

Either way we all got to see another side of one another. It was awesome to see everyone helping out each other on the ice and making stronger bonds. We even got to meet some new people and try new things.

Thanks to those of you who chose their first skating experience to be with MRTSY. This event was truly fantastic- if you missed it make sure to make some memories with us at our next event!!

What was your favorite part of MRTSY's ice skating event?

Sandwich Sale for the Philippines!

Just a few weeks ago, Typhoon Haiyan- one of the strongest storms in world history- tore through the Philippines, leaving millions without homes, food, or other basic necessities.

With our new focus on social action, MRTSY will be doing a sandwich sale Sunday, December 15th after Hebrew School. Proceeds will go to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which is providing relief in the Philippines.

Sandwiches are only $3 (and very delicious)! We have peanut-free options for those with allergies.

Your support is greatly appreciated as it goes toward tikkun olam- repairing the world.

New to Six Flags Fright Fest this year is the terror trail – Total Darkness, a blackout maze. Six Flags offers 6 different terror trails, sure to scare the pants off anybody.

Don't forget that there are STILL TICKETS AVAILABLE. However, this is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Email to claim yours.

AND the event is now open to eighth graders!

As Autumn Comes…

The Hebrew word for autumn is “stav” סְתָו . In Israel, autumn is very different from here in New Jersey. Autumn starts when daytime is equivalent to nighttime, and ends when the amount of light is the shortest. In the Mediterranean, the weather in fall is pretty much the same as summer, with heat spells and sunny days. But fall in Israel is the bridge between the sunny season and the rainy season. So as predicted, showers begin to dampen the dry land every now and then. Another interesting fact is when autumn begins, snails start to appear everywhere because they love the damp. Cotton is ready for harvest, and the beautiful flower, the squill, starts to bloom.

Some Autumn Hebrew words:

Autumn- Stav- סְתָו
Squill- Chatsav- חָצָב
Cotton-Kutnah- כֻּתְנָה

Snail-Chilazon- חִלָּזוֹן

September Recap!

Phew... it has been one busy month for MRTSY.

Some of you may have seen us earlier this month at the High Holy Days, whether at the door (handling walk-ins) or babysitting. But it was the end of the month that really took off.

On September 22nd, we had our MRTSY Info Session in the Sukkah, a chance for incoming members to learn about MRTSY (and to eat some delicious food).

Starting off with some mixers to break the ice!
Every good event has Nutella.
Edible (very yummy) Sukkahs!

The same week, MRTSY participated in Family Promise's Cardboard Box City, during which people all throughout Monmouth County raise money and awareness for homelessness by sleeping in a box overnight! It was an enlightening and unforgettable experience!

Playing some cards as the nights' festivities wind down...
Made it through the whole night! Woohoo!
But the month wasn't over yet! Only two days later, the MRTSY teen board drove up to Temple Emanu-El in Edison for NFTY (National Federation of Temple Youth) Leadership Training Institute (LTI). Not only was it an amazing opportunity to meet other Jewish teens throughout the state (and parts of New York), but it also was a chance to learn how to be the best Jewish leaders we can be!

Our lovely board members!
At the end of LTI- time for a song session!
And after all that, we're all ready for NEXT month! Hopefully you can join us on October 19th for our annual trip to Six Flags Great Adventure Fright Fest! (More details coming soon!)

Will you be joining MRTSY for their upcoming events? (Don't forget that you can get a sneak peek in our Calendar tab!)
